Step 1

Set up Google Search Console

Go to search.google.com/search-console, add your website and verify that you own it. It shows which searches bring people to your site and alerts you to problems.

Step 2

Find the words customers use

List how customers would describe what you sell, for example "emergency plumber in Dallas". Check related searches at the bottom of Google results, and use Google Keyword Planner (free with a Google Ads account) for ideas.

Step 3

Give each page one clear focus

Match each important page to one main topic or service. Avoid several pages competing for the same phrase.

Step 4

Write good titles and descriptions

Each page needs a unique title tag that includes its main topic, ideally under about 60 characters. Add a meta description that explains the page and encourages clicks.

Step 5

Use clear headings and helpful content

Use one main heading (H1) per page and subheadings for sections. Answer the questions customers actually ask, in plain language.

Write for people first. Content that is genuinely helpful tends to do better than content stuffed with keywords.

Step 6

Make it fast and mobile-friendly

Check your site on a phone. Compress large images and test speed with Google's free PageSpeed Insights.

Step 7

Link your pages together

Link related pages to each other with descriptive text, such as "see our drain cleaning service" instead of "click here".

Step 8

Submit a sitemap and track progress

In Search Console, open Sitemaps and submit your sitemap URL (often /sitemap.xml). Review the Performance report monthly.

SEO takes time. Changes can take weeks or months to show in results, and no one can guarantee rankings.
